Hi!
I miss coming in! We were out of power for 6 days during the recent outage and I just felt very discombobulated — the only time it was light in our house was in the middle of the day and I had to run around catching up on various things. I’ll see everyone next week!

Hi,
Sorry it has been so long since I have reported in. I have been besieged by technical difficulties.
I had a good day in the R4W this Tuesday.
WIth Ms. Guilfoy’s 4th graders, we read “Love Necessitates” by Eugene B. Redmond. I asked the children to think of someone who sets high standards for them and is very strict enforcing them.
Here is Cortez’ response:
My Coach
My coach makes us do exercises
before we do anything.
He even makes us run five miles
and he makes us do suicides all down the field.
But it doesn’t matter, because he’s still my Dad.
“Good practice, Kiddo.”
BY CORTEZ GILLAND
With the Ms. Warren’s 7th graders, we read Pablo Neruda’s “Ode to My Socks.” All of the students were unfamiliar with the “ode” form, but we had fun talking about its possibilities. Here are a few examples of what they came up with.
Ode to My Ticky Clock
By Darius
This clock is so loud
it disturbs me in my sleep.
It sounds like it’s chewing
on something good to eat.
Tick tock, it says, driving
me mad. If somebody
destroys this clock
I will be glad.
So clock, please stop
this ticking away.
If you do I may give you
a chocolate Pay Day.
Bang! Yes, I destroyed
the clock with this
big black shiny wok!

Here is another poem written by Darius the week before, when our topic was animals.
The Monkey
I am afraid of that
Monkey in that sky
That keeps jumping up so high
I try to run the other way
But when I look up
She’s still there plain as day
I run under a car hoping to get away
I look up, that monkey is still there
Black as day
By Darius
I am going to type up something by everyone and give copies to the teachers as well as display some on the walls.
yours,
Sally
